“These are really good. I’m going to get them printed and put up around the house in the country.” Kane lay on the bed, looking through the photos she’d taken earlier of all the occupants of the house. Livia and Steven had left shortly after the photoshoot, taking Rio and Abbi with them. Only Coco and Eli remained. Tia had sensed an intense sadness come over them all when the two couples had left. It was as though they were so used to being together that the thought of being apart was painful to them.

“Can I ask you something?” Tia sat on what was fast becoming her favorite chair in the bedroom —a room which she now realized she was meant to share with Kane. It was late in the day, and she’d eaten her dinner naked and at the table before retiring with him. She was still reluctant to be near him without any clothes on. She’d learned throughout the day that he wouldn’t hurt her and was actually a very tender and loving man, but the nakedness thing still bothered her—it wasn’t as natural for her as it was for them. Strangely enough, the tattoos didn’t concern her. They excited her, and she’d spent a lot of the afternoon staring at the intricate design bandaged in clingfilm on her finger.

“What?” Kane sat up and placed her camera down.

“Do you spend all your time together?”

“Yes. It’s going to be strange not being with the others, but I won’t take you to the country until you’re happy to come with me.” He looked forlorn, and she could see he felt the loss of his friends.

“What if I’m never happy?”

“I’ll stay as long as it takes. I know you think all this fate stuff is foolish, but it’s what I believe in.”

She fell silent, trying to take in what he said. Kane being her fate didn’t seem as strange now as it did when she woke up this morning.

“How’s your finger?” Kane tipped his chin toward her hand.

“A little sore.”

“Do you want some more aloe vera?”

“No, it’s fine. I’m just a wimp when it comes to pain.”

“You’ll get used to it.”

Tia knew he was talking about getting the rest of her body tattooed. “What part hurts the most?” She found herself asking. At the moment it wasn’t something she wanted to consider. But the fact that she was willing to discuss it was a full turn around since this morning. She was such an idiot. Why was she even asking that question? Instead, she should be getting up and searching for a way out of the house.

Kane smirked. “You’ve endured one of the worse parts. Anywhere that isn’t meaty hurts: ribs, ankles, fingers. You survived that without much issue, so I doubt it’ll be a problem.”

“Only because you went down on me.” The words left her mouth before she had a chance to think about what she was saying. She immediately slapped her hands over her mouth and inwardly cursed.

“If it stops the pain, I’m happy to do it any time you get a tattoo.
